Why they cheat?
Currently HSC board examination in Maharashtra is going on and there are more than 50 copy cases filed on first day. By considering the news I'm writing this article.
Cheating in examinations is the act of dishonestly obtaining or attempting to obtain an unfair advantage in an academic assessment. Bringing unauthorized materials, notes, or electronic devices into an exam setting are major items found during inspection.
But why students tend to do cheating in examination? What are main reasons for them to adapt these malpractices?
I came up accross few points that promotes cheating in examination.
1. Institute Pressure: We observe that many times some of institutes pressurise students to get higher marks only for their reputation. No matter how students are doing in their personal life. Sometimes there are family issues going on at their home and because of that students are unable to focus on studies.
2. Fear of Failure: Every student having fear of failure despite they studied hard. By considering the syllabus the study done by student is minimal and because of that they feared for failure.
3. Unfinished preparation: Students are engaged with continuous study but they feel something is left to cover. And in this situation they feel something else should be done to get with remaining topics. And that leads to take notes with them in examination hall.
How to overcome these situations?
1. Emphasize Academic Integrity: Promote a culture of honesty and integrity within the educational institution, emphasizing the importance of learning for personal growth rather than just achieving grades.
2. Clear Academic Expectations: Ensure students understand the consequences of cheating and the importance of individual effort. Clearly communicate academic expectations and the value of authentic learning.
3. Diversify Assessment Methods: Use a variety of assessment techniques, such as project-based assessments, presentations, and open-book exams, to evaluate different aspects of a student's understanding and discourage reliance on memorization.
4. Encourage Time Management: Help students develop effective time management skills, reducing the temptation to cheat due to last-minute cramming or feeling overwhelmed by deadlines.
5. Provide Support Services: Offer academic support services, such as tutoring and counseling, to assist students in overcoming challenges and improving their understanding of the material.
